I was invited to the Science Gallery in Dublin to teach a one-day workshop to their target audience of 15- to 25-year-olds during the synthetic biology related exhibition “Grow your own”. The concept for the workshop “Synthetic Biology Superheroes” was inspired by the history of popular culture’s response to technological disasters, as in the example of “Tetsuwan Atomu”, a popular Japanese manga series about a nuclear-powered superhero.
The workshop involved exploring and discussing possible synthetic biology error scenarios and designing superheroes and superpowers as a speculative, pop-cultural response to these. The three error scenarios were developed before the workshop in collaboration with scientists.
