“DESIGNING BIOLOGY” WORKSHOP AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART / IMPERIAL COLLEGE
Designing Biology” was a 4-day workshop I planned and conducted at the Royal College of Art / Imperial College in October 2013. For the workshop I collaborated with James Field, a doctoral researcher at Imperial College’s Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation, and Millie Clive-Smith, a recent graduate from the RCA’s Innovation Design Engineering course. The workshop was an introduction to different ways in which designers and artists can engage with the emerging technology of synthetic biology.
It involved both hands-on work with DNA and bacteria, to show which tools are available to designers today, as well as far future design speculations, to imagine how artists and designers might work with synthetic biology in the future. The workshop ended with a symposium during which five different speakers working in science, art and design related to synthetic biology gave talks about their work.
